This week I want to take on a rather big subject, and that’s corresponding with Russian women over the Internet. Many people are worried about the cultural differences between America and Eastern Europe, and are afraid that they might say something wrong when sending a message to a beautiful Russian or Ukrainian woman they met online through a dating site. This post should set the record straight. But first let me say the golden rule for writing letters to an Eastern European girl: it is as much about listening as it is about writing.
Q: I want to begin corresponding with Russian and Ukrainian girls I saw on a dating site. Is it better to write to one girl at a time, or to correspond with a few and decide which one I want to devote more time to?
If you read reviews online of the big Russian dating sites, you’ll see the overwhelming advice is to begin by writing to several ladies from the start. This is very practical advice, and let me tell you why. The photos of these lovely ladies from the East are bewitching, but there is a real woman on the other side. She doesn’t expect or even want you to become committed to her just by seeing a photo. A man that does so is not “romantic” but unrealistic. If you are looking for girlfriend or a Russian bride, there has to be more substance behind your communication before you “go steady”—even by email. A reasonable woman will suppose that you are writing to several ladies (and she is probably responding to several men) when you make your first contact.
How should you approach the subject if she asks? Be honest. I suggest writing back something like the following, but obviously written in your own words: “Right now, I am corresponding with a few women that I hope might be compatible with me. So far, it has been wonderful getting to know you, and I definitely want to learn more about you. In the future, if one of us feels that the other is not the right one, I hope we can be honest about it right away.” Writing something like this indicates to her that you are a sincere and trustworthy person. It further tells her that you are desirable, reasonable, and worth her time. Believe me when I say that she will love you all the more when, later in your romance, you can tell her that you chose her over the other women.
Q: Is it possible to know how rich or poor a Russian lady is just by her online photo or profile?Sorry guys, the answer is no. Keep in mind that the photos you see on dating sites are usually taken by a glamour photographer, and often the lady herself doesn’t even choose it. More important to consider is that appearance is very different in Russia and Ukraine. Women tend to wear far more makeup, as well as tight or revealing clothing. This Russian “outfit” does not carry the same negative stereotype as it does in the West and won’t tell you much about her socio-economic status. If you want to know about a Russian lady from a dating site, you’ll have to write to her!
Q: Does a Russian or Ukrainian lady expect to me to marry her if I begin a correspondence?Just because you begin corresponding with an Eastern European lady you meet online doesn’t mean that marriage is inevitable. You know that, and she knows that. This is why it’s important to make your intentions known from the beginning, and is usually asked for in the online profiles. Being honest about whether you are interested in friendship, marriage or something else makes for a healthier correspondence. However, if you take too long to decide if you want to take the next step with a beautiful Russian or Ukrainian woman, don’t be surprised if she moves on!
